An impact tensile-shear test has been developed for use on resistance spot welded sheet specimens. Test results have been compared with those obtained using conventional static tensile-shear and cross-tension tests on single spot welds in 1. 2mm mild steel sheet. A 55% reduction in weld diameter from the normally recommended value reduced the static tensile-shear strength by only 18%, while the estimated energy for failure was reduced by 81%. The implications of the results obtained are discussed and it is considered that further work must be conducted before spot welded assemblies can be used with confidence where impact conditions are met with in service.
