摘要
This study has yielded information regarding the molecular basis for the action of copper(II) ions as an important bactericide, molluscicide, fungicide and spermatocide. The general action of excess copper(II) ions is to inactivate thiol groups containing molecules, such as glutathione, that are vital for the whole cell. This occurs via a reaction that leads to the inactivation of three SH-groups per Cu(II) ion; as a result, Cu(II) is reduced to Cu(I) ions. This study also gives an idea regarding the action of penicillamine, a drug that has proven efficient in the treatment of Wilson's disease, arthritis and metal intoxication.
