A description of the design of a device that is intended for revealing areas in danger of gas outburst and fire in coal mines and is based on an anisotropic thermoelectric sensor composed of the eutectic CdSb-CoSb alloy is given. The requirements for sensor materials are determined. An experimental batch of alarms developed using these sensors for monitoring the radiation temperature has undergone testing in mines in the Donets coal field. © 2000 The Optical Society of America.
