The influence of various surfactants on degree of dispersion and mass transfer in liquid/liquid extraction was investigated on the system water/acetone/toluene. The tested surfactants included five sodium alkyl sulphates with 8 to 18 C-atoms in the alkyl chain as well as three sodium dodecyl ether alcohol sulphates with two, four and six ethylene oxide groups. Degree of dispersion and mass transfer were studied using the rising drop method. As a rule, the presence of surfactants increases the degree of dispersion and reduces mass transfer, as compared to extraction in absence of surfactants. But at the same time, it was found that special surfactant mixtures as well as a combined application of a surfactant and a small quantity of an inorganic salt may not only improve the degree of dispersion but also mass transfer.
