In this paper, a description is given of the influence exerted by various inorganic Lewis acids on the catalytic reaction of pi -butadiene-1,3-cobalt- pi -3-methylhepta-1,5-diene-7-yl and pi -cyclooctadiene-1,5-cobalt- pi -cyclooctenyl with butadiene in benzene and n-heptane. Polybutadiene with high cis-1,4 contents are obtained by means of a multiple molar excess of Lewis acids referred to the cobalt compound, such as BF multiplied by (times) O(C//2H//5)//2 or AlBr//3. The course of polymerization was followed by using NMR spectroscopy.
