Positioning drilling rigs using global positioning system is described. Rig positioning is basically a two phase operation. First the rig is maneuvered over the specified location within a certain acceptable tolerance. Then the actual well position is determined with high accuracy, yielding also an independent position verification. Survey, navigation phase, and commerical aspects are also discussed.
