摘要
There are no easy resolutions to the problems that the profession and industry are facing in the construction process. The potential for major structural failures appears, if anything, to be increasing rather than decreasing. To some degree at least, the engineering community is battered by the changes in the construction process with the pressures to get work done quickly, with minimal review, and for a low fee. From a technical viewpoint, perhaps the most important implication of the recent failures is the recognition of the importance of safety and durability in the structural design process. Research and education must contribute to the design and construction process by recognizing the changes that are taking place and developing technology and training engineers who are suited to this new environment.
