SOURCE OF FORMATION OF OXIDATION PRODUCTS IN PETROLUEM-DERIVED ENGINE FUELS.

Straight-run motor fuels produced by the distillation of crude oil are oxidized by atmospheric oxygen under conditions of extended storage (many years of storage). The process rate is low. Investigation of this process is of practical interest. The authors have carried out such studies, based on extended and systematic observations on fuels over a period of about 30 years. Certain data is presented from ongoing studies on jet and diesel fuels. Oxidation of these fuels in extended storage was of particular interest, since the contents of heteroatomic compounds in hydrotreated fuels are minimal (traces). It is shown that under conditions of extended storage, straight-run distillate engine fuels from primary crude oil distrillation are oxidized; the primary source of formation of oxygen compounds is found in the heteroatomic sulfur and nitrogen compounds, and then in alkylaromatic hydrocarbons.
