Experiments conducted on mild steel under torsional low-cycle fatigue, on a torsional low cycle fatigue testing machine designed and fabricated at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, are described. A brief literature review concerning the various testing machines, the importance of evaluation of low-cycle fatigue data and important stages in the development of strain-life relationship are given. The experimental results of the work done in recent years, particularly on low-cycle fatigue in torsion, is reviewed. It is concluded that the designed machine is useful for low-cycle fatigue studies in torsion.
