To evaluate the potential in coprocessing three highly volatile bituminous: coals from China in comparison with international standard coals are co-reacted with two vacuum residues from the major Chinese petroleum deposits. Reaction conditions are 12 MPa initial hydrogen pressure, 460°C and 30 min residence time. A standard catalyst is added. Hydrogen uptake, conversion and product distribution are calculated (a) based on coal; (b) based on total feed. The Pangi coal from the Anhui province is especially promising for co-processing, yielding 80% total distillates at only 3% gas and 1.5% asphaltene formation, based on total feed.
