Shell cooling systems, properly planned and installed, can result in considerable improvement in burning zone refractory performance, with little or no decrease in thermal efficiency. Paper analyzes theoretical aspects of shell cooling by examining four involved in the process media- the coating that forms; the refractory lining; the steel shell; and the cooling '%'fluid'%', that may be water or air.
