A theoretical treatment is presented for the phenomenon of nonlinear photoelasticity in impure crystals, which consists of a significantly nonlinear dependence of the permittivity of a crystal on the amplitude of a harmonic sound wave propagating in the crystal. With certain approximations, an expression is derived for the impurity permittivity of the crystal in the presence of a sound wave, and a detailed study is made of the resonance case in which the energy of the electromagnetic field quantum is close to the characteristic energy difference between the impurity levels.
