Nondestructive Testing of Welded Joints.

The objective, characteristic features, and limitations of the various nondestructive testing methods for welded joints are first reviewed. It is shown that while the results of penetration and magnetic particle tests can be evaluated relatively unproblematically, the results of ultrasonic and irradiation methods must be classified, interpreted, and evaluated to bring into account the detection limitations of the test method, the effective stresses, and the fracture behavior. Emphasis is placed on the discussion of the aspects which have to be considered in the drafting of test instructions and quality specifications for welded joints.
