A study was made of the self-diffraction of light on the surface of germanium when gratings were induced by neodymium and ruby lasers emitting a single mode (TEM//O//O) under passive Q-switched conditions. The results indicated that self-diffraction was due to modulation of the surface as a result of thermal expansion, which produced a pressure and density grating with a surface relief 10 nm deep.
