Today's digital multimeters (DMMs) offer a lot of instrumentation, often in very small packages. Varieties range from relatively inexpensive probe types to the multithousand dollar, multichannel sampling types. This article provides selection guidelines for portable, handheld DMMs. It helps determine what questions to ask at the outset of a purchase decision and includes a handy checklist for future reference. The most important selection factors are the functions and ranges available, the overall dependability of the unit, and ease of use.
