An equation of coal metamorphism has been derived on the basis of the laws of chemical kinetics with the aid of which it has been established that a fall in the temperature in the earth's crust leads to the cessation of the metamorphic processes. The degree of metamorphic changes of hard coals and anthracites is determined by the combined action of the temperature and the pressure, the pressure inhibiting the metamorphic processes. The metamorphism of brown coals is determined by the pressure, and the temperature is an activating factor that is manifested more definitely only in the zone of the transition to hard coals.
