The redevelopment of our inner cities, if it is to be successfully achieved, must cater imaginatively for the requirements of the community with regard to the work place (offices, industrial premises), welfare facilities (hospitals), amenities (shopping centers, car parks) and leisure facilities (sports centers, stadia). Moreover, if it is to be achieved economically, the key-note will be efficiency in all disciplines, planning and coordination, and speed in design and construction. In respect of all these requirements prestressed concrete and post-tensioning techniques can play a significant part. The role played by prestressed concrete and post-tensioning techniques is described in this paper.
