Although the adoption of black liquor oxidation systems for new mills is declining, the technology of sulphide oxidation is gaining in importance in kraft mill operations. The authors discuss the process of sulphide oxidation and its kinetics. Reaction variables and the influence of catalysts on the reaction rate and product mix are considered. The application of sulphide oxidation in white liquor, black liquor and in stack gas scrubbing solutions is discussed.
