This report presents a preliminary assessment of the dynamic behavior of a building based on the vibration data recorded prior to (ambient), during, and after (ambient) the October 15, 1979 earthquake. The thirteen building and the three nearby free field records obtained during this earthquake are analyzed in detail in the time and frequency domains to trace the nonlinear response. A study of the relative displacement time histories shows that yielding initiated in the first story columns between 6 and 7 seconds after the initial triggering.
