It is shown that optical particle counters (OPC) can be a useful tool in determining the size distribution and concentration of dust aerosols. Two systems were built and are currently being used for studying these types of dust. It was also shown that by using inertial impactors for calibration, it is possible to obtain a calibration of the OPC based upon the aerodynamic diameter of the particles, which is an important parameter in determining the quantity of respirable dust.
