A comparison of the data obtained with synthetic phenolic waste and live waste reveals that some of the engineering parameters differ, because the synthetic waste contains only phenol while the live waste has other organic carbonaceous materials which exert an oxygen demand. These materials also get oxidized during the biodegradation processes along with phenols in the activated sludge process.
