The availability of online patent files and their subject searching powers is examined. Files devoted to U. S. patents are presented that are derived to a greater or lesser degree from the machine readable records used to print U. S. patents. Their enhancement by various indexing efforts, their subject searching capabilities, patent classification, claims, inventor abstracts and other topics are considered. Future improvements are also recommended.
