Over the past several decades numerous studies have been conducted to confirm and quantify the biodegradability of cellulose films. These studies simulated both litter and landfill conditions to measure this biodegradability feature and define it in realistic terms. This article presents a technical review of some of the most recent biodegradation studies of cellulose films. Subjects covered include the biodegradation process, cellulose film testing, burial conditions, and marine and surface litter conditions.
