General remarks about reactors in a fluidized bed are followed by a detailed review of modeling the gas-solid systems, with particular attention to the countercurrent backmixing models. The latter models are discussed under subheadings - observations of backmixing; gas exchange; distribution of gas between bubbles, wake, and dense phase; boundary conditions; average concentration; theoretical reactor solution-differential equations; variation of bubble diameter with height; comparison with experiments. Other models which are discussed and compared with the countercurrent model include - simple two-phase models; Kunii and Levenspiel model; May-Van Deemter model; and slugging fluidized bed reactors.
