The mid-infrared photonic crystal distributed-feedback (PCDFB) laser with enhanced spectral purity and beam quality were discussed. Optical lithography and reactive-ion etching were found to be used to define a second-order grating with periods of 4.09 and 1.49 μm along the two rectangular axis. The analysis suggested that the PCDFB configuration enhances the optical coherence of broad-stripe semiconductor lasers that emit at any wavelength.
