Recent developments in query processing are applied to interactive cartographics as part of a geographic information system for environmental planning. A cartographic query language facilitates flexible man-machine interaction with a cartographic data base and enhances the prospect of utilizing a map as a heuristic model for suggesting spatial relationships.
