In this approach to construction, the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) efforts are structured to allow the use of multiple lump sum contracts. There are advantages and disadvantages to this as well as areas of potential risk. Detail planning, complete design engineering, procurement of critical equipment and materials, and a full construction management effort are essential in order for the approach to succeed. This overview of an approach to construction through the use of multiple lump sum contracts includes the advantages, potential disadvantages and risks as well as those areas that require proper planning before contracts are let out for bid.
