The design of an anti-Compton spectrometer consisting of a Ge detector and an asymmetric anti-Compton shield made of bismuth germanate is described. Its dimensions have been optimized by means of Monte Carlo calculations. The features predicted for this asymmetric anti-Compton shield are compared with those of symmetric ones. The design of a gamma - gamma coincidence spectrometer consisting of twelve anti-Compton spectrometers and a sum-energy and gamma -ray multiplicity filter is discussed. Results of neutron-sensitivity measurements for bismuth germanate and sodium iodide detectors are presented.
