Panel type display devices, such as the ac plasma panel, have the advantages of small depth dimension, no deflection distortion, etc. A LTV display experiment of 1 MHz bandwidth was performed using an ac plasma panel. It showed that black and white linear disturbances occur and deteriorate the picture quality, when the brightness changes with time. This paper clarifies the mechanism of generation of this distrubance, and gives a method to reduce the disturbance below the allowable level. This method involves the change of the bit-order and the reduction of the display time to one quarter field. A new adaptive drive circuit is also proposed in which the write-in mode and the picture element configuration are changed, depending on the types of the pictures to be displayed. With this adaptive drive circuit, the circuit is reduced by a factor of one quarter as compared with the conventional line-at-a-time scheme.
