The paper gives an informal introduction into the various problem areas of the communications software development. Concepts to structure communication and software are the basis for a software life-cycle model identifying essential development phases. In discussing the details and interdependencies of these development phases, emphasis has been laid on the assessment of formal techniques for specification and verification. Methods and tools of different development phases can be combined to engineering environments to support quality assurance and productivity enhancement.
