Loss analysis successfully identifies the optimum choice for a cryogenic separation process for recovering hydrogen in a complex operation such as an SNG production from coal. Potential energy savings between the simplest process and a heat pump design are shown to result in savings of nearly 50%. This paper shows that energy required for recovering hydrogen in SNG plants is largely dependent on process design. The optimum choice can be partially defined by thermodynamic loss analysis. Details of the method described are given.
