The process of cavitation failure of carbide coatings is not accompanied by plastic deformation, which is characteristic of most steels and alloys. Failure of the coatings occurs mainly as a result of the formation and development of cracks. Differences in the cavitation stability of carbon steels with the same type of coating of the same thickness depend on the structure of the steel, since after local failure of the coating intense wear of the metal occurs. The application of carbide coatings makes it possible to increase the cavitation stability of carbon steels 5- to 7-fold.
