A feasible approach to the calculation of noise immunity and selection of the detection threshold of acoustic-emission monitoring systems is discussed in the example of a method described previously by the authors for inspection of the edges of cylindrical objects on the basis of the acoustic noise generated by the object as it rolls along an inclined plane. The computational procedure is based on the application of statistical decision theory with the use of experimental data on the distribution function of the stochastic processes associated with acoustic noise induced by clean and defective objects.
