Although the high strength to weight alloys of aluminum, magnesium and titanium occur abundantly in ore form in the Earth's crust, their extraction and subsequent processing can be expensive, both in terms of cost and energy, and their application to engineering is not always as straightforward as at first might appear. This article introduces some of the factors to be considered in their selection and indicates some of the difficulties encountered in their processing and subsequent performance.
