Physical models representing atom movement in liquid metals and the dependence of diffusivity on the property of the matrix have been examined. The rate controlling processes in some heterogeneous reactions like dissolution of carbon steel or of alumina in liquid iron, evaporation losses during vacuum distillation, desulfurization and decarburization of molten iron have also been reviewed.
