The interdisciplinary approach to the research and exploitation of the many forms of glass led to the establishment of the Centre for Glass Research at the University of Sheffield. The Centre was officially opened by Sir Robin Nicholson in June 1996 and aimed to provide a national focus for excellence in the research and teaching of glass science and technology. It also aimed to maintain the strong international reputation of the University of Sheffield in glass research and nurture research links with industries which produce or use glasses.
