摘要
Optical fibres can be broadly grouped into three classes: step index, graded index and single mode fibres. It is this latter class which is currently receiving considerable attention because they exhibit distinct advantages, in some applications, over the other two groups of fibres. They exhibit very low attenuation, low dispersion and like other optical fibres are not affected by electrical interference. In this article the author reviews the construction of fibres designed for single mode light transmission, and outlines how their characteristics suit them to a variety of tasks.
