It is estimated from Si K// alpha energy shifts that the basicity of the BF slag is nearly equal to that of the alkali metal orthosilicate, while that of the LD slag is somewhat larger. The coordination number of aluminum in the slag is expected to be 4. Calcium is present mainly as calcium orthosilicate in the BF slag. In the LD slag, the value implies the presence of free CaO. Manganese is present as divalent ion (probably MnO). The sulfate content is about 45 and 20% in the LD and BF slags.
