A PILOT ICE-PUMPING INSTALLATION WAS PLACED ON LINE AT THE GOLD MINE ON THE EAST RAND, SOUTH AFRICA AS PART OF A STUDY DESIGNED TO REVEAL THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SUCH A SYSTEM FOR COOLING HOT MINES. THE INSTALLATION COMPRISES ICE-MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT TOGETHER WIH A REFRIGERATED STORAGE BUNKER AND ICE-PUMPING EQUIPMENT LOCATED ON THE SURFACE. SINCE ICE HAS FOUR TIMES THE COOLING CAPACITY OF AN EQUIVALENT MASS OF WATER, THE USE OF ICE AS A MEDIUM FOR PROVIDING CHILLED SERVICE WATER FOR COOLING WORKPLACES IN HOT GOLD MINES HAS ATTRACTIVE POTENTIAL.
