A number of methods have been developed over the last few years to calculate the reliability of power supply from a system consisting of production (power stations and contracts) and distribution. The problem of applying these methods is discussed from the Verbundgesellschaft's point of view. An attempt is made to indicate the reasons why in practice there is no urgent need to apply the existing mathematical methods to a system with a predominant proportion of hydro generation and a strong interconnection with surrounding electricity supply systems. The expediency in terms of company policy of studying and using these formalized methods is demonstrated.
