The new diesel shares many dimensions with the 350 cid gasoline engine which provided the starting point for the diesel conversion. It is rated 120 hp at 3600 rpm. Compression ratio in the diesel is 22. 3:1, nearly three times that of the gasoline engine, and major components in the diesel version have been strengthened; these include the block, crank, camshaft, rods and lifters. The fuel injection pump is a rotary-type unit which is mounted in the ″V″ , directly under the air cleaner. The precombustion chamber in each of the cylinder heads is fitted with a glow plug to assist in cold starting. The dual 12-Volt batteries provide the power source for the glow plugs and additional power necessary for cranking the high compression engine. Olds reports that fuel tests show an economy improvement of up to 25% over gasoline engines with comparable performance.
