The author looks at three main areas-greensand moulding, cold-setting silicate/resin-bonded sand technology, including the Cosworth process, and the evaporation pattern casting (EPC) processes. In the context of greensand moulding, there has been the relatively recent introduction of air impulse and gas impact compaction systems, although it is said that the blow-squeeze moulding approach is still the most significant greensand process currently available. In discussing cold-set processes, the author looks in particular at the Cosworth Process which is seen to be a successful exploitation of this particular technology. EPC is attracting investment by some of the world's major automobile manufacturers who are setting up facilities to produce castings by this means.
