Santasalo Gear of Finland has developed a method for the manufacture of large gear rings made up in the form of segments. The heavy gear ring - known as a girth ring - is made up of Kymenite (austempered ductile iron) segments. Each segment has three teeth and is assembled on to the base ring periphery by means of key and four screws. The segments are interchangeable and reversible.
