The hardware and software advances of the last few years have allowed many features of artificial intelligence technology to be moved from dedicated machines and to new general-purpose architectures. In particular, conventional workstations from Apollo, Digital Equipment Corp, Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems are starting to be stiff competition for the dedicated AI machines made by Lisp Machine Inc, Symbolics, Texas Instruments and Xerox.
