Processes of contamination of atmosphere due to emissions from coke oven batteries have been considered. The main contaminating components are oxides of nitrogen, carbon, and sulfur. Coke oven gas is cleaned from sulfur. This makes it possible to reduce the contamination. Mechanisms of formation of oxides of carbon and nitrogen have been discussed. In order to decrease contents of harmful components in flue gases, it is necessary to provide step-by-step supply of the heating gas and air, to apply systems for combustion product recycling, to control excess air coefficient, to improve the regeneration systems etc. Technologies for utilization of gas heat are discussed.
