A criterion for the evaluation of th effectiveness of operation of the fraction drive and a mathematical description of the mode of its operation during the process of digging are developed in the article. The diagram of forces acting on the bucket during excavation, the relations for their determination, taking into account the variable volume of soil in the bucket, and the equation for the summary moment of static resistances, applied to the shaft, are presented. An equation for the motion of the drive is derived. It permits determination of all the necessary parameters of the excavation process during the first stage of the transient mode of operation.
