The frequency dependence of the attenuation of the E//1//1**y mode as a result of reflection and radiation at step discontinuities in one of the transverse dimensions of rectangular and ridge dielectric waveguides is calculated using the method of effective permittivities. A qualitative explanation of this dependence and of the experimental results is given.
