Experimental Studies of Horizontal Macrosegregation During Solidification with a Heterogeneous Layer.

Macrosegregation during solidification of iron-carbon and iron-phosphorus melts under defined flow conditions was measured in an experimental set-up for unidirectional solidification. In addition, the width of the heterogeneous layer and the solidification rate were measured with thermocouples. The measurements obtained were compared with theoretical values. In general, the agreement was good, In addition, it was shown in investigations of a 15 t rimming steel ingot to what extent the proposed equations may be applied to operational conditions.
