摘要
A study is presented of the operating duty of surge arresters caused by overvoltages induced on overhead distribution lines by lightning striking the ground nearby. Particular consideration is given to the surges resulting from multiple-stroke lightning flashes. It is suggested that a significant fraction of arrester failures may be caused by these multiple component overvoltages because the resulting repeated passage of power-follow current can exceed the short-term energy absorbing capabilities of the arresters. Recent experimental data obtained on operational distribution lines in South Africa are presented in support of this suggestion.
