Problems associated with standard computer oriented methods for waveguide discontinuities are considered. Based on a finite field expansion in two sets of normal modes and straightforward matrix inversion, they become increasingly unsatisfactory with the number of strongly interacting discontinuities. A new approach is presented, whose features are good convergence of the numerical solution and the explicit description of the frequency dependence of the equivalent network. The method is demonstrated for the case of the symmetric inductive iris in a rectangular waveguide.
